Thommy Cooper Thomas

October 16, 1950 — June 29, 2024

Waco

Thommy Thomas, 73, of Hallsburg, Texas, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and church member who followed Jesus and persevered through disability with a joyful heart and a smile. A Celebration of Life service will be held at First Methodist Church of Mart at 701 E. Texas Ave., Mart, Texas on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 2:00 pm.

Thommy was born October 16, 1950 in Waco, Texas to Robert Rawls and Pat (Patterson) Thomas. He attended McLennan Community College to study computers and worked in the field for many years. Thommy had a variety of interests from technology, photography, music, nature and history. He always enjoyed lively conversation with anyone he met, and his varied interests provided common ground with people from all walks of life.

Thommy was an active member of Central United Methodist Church of Waco, Texas for many years. He was a long time member of the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choir. The bell choir was especially important to Thommy, and he loved the sense of church family, opportunity to serve the community, and ability to offer praise through music the bell choir provided. In his later years, Thommy attended his home church from childhood, First Methodist Church in Mart, Texas.

Nearly 30 years ago, Thommy suffered a broken neck during a car accident. His determined and cheerful spirit was an inspiration during his recovery and rehabilitation. The last few years brought more complications and limitations from that injury, but he remained positive. His love for Jesus and others gave him the resilience to face these challenges with hope and optimism. Even in the last months of his life, he was intent on making sure that his family knew that he loved and appreciated them. His life is a testimony of suffering well and holding on to the joy found in Jesus.

Thommy is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Rawls and Pat (Patterson) Thomas. He is survived by his sister, Susan Thomas; his children, Katie Schwarz and her husband Steven, Jared Thomas and his wife Lisa; and his grandchildren, Riley and Declan Schwarz. There are many friends that will also cherish his memory.
