Larry Wayne Cathey, known as Butch to family and friends, was born to W.M. and Mamie (Thomas) Cathey on October 20, 1946, in Baytown, TX. Butch passed away on April 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and the simple joys of a life well lived.
Butch was a man who found happiness in the things that mattered most. He loved bluegrass music and could often be found picking his banjo alongside good friends, sharing laughter and songs that brought people together. He enjoyed watching old westerns, appreciating their stories of grit and character. He loved taking rides through the country on his motorcycle. A skilled welder by trade, he was truly a jack of all trades. He took pride in helping others, always ready to lend a hand to neighbors and friends. He cherished his beloved little dogs, Maddy and Missy, who brought him comfort and joy.
Above all, Butch’s greatest love was his wife Liz (Elizabeth) Ann Farmer Cathey. Their love and marriage spanned more than 45 years. Together they built a life of memories and deep love. Butch will be remembered for his generous spirit, his steady presence, and the warmth he brought to those around him.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, W.M. and Mamie Cathey and his sister, Ann Cathey Grant.
He is survived by his wife, Liz Cathey; sons, Larry Cathey and wife Tammy, Michael Cathey and wife Lara; daughter, Stephanie Johnson and husband Brian; brother, James Cathey and wife Lydia, sister, Betty Cathey, all of Athens; grandchildren, Hillary Cathey, Larry Cathey, Jr., Ashley Cathey-Anderson and husband Austin, Alex Meredith and husband Ryan, Whitney Cathey-Miller and husband Cooter, Dillion Cathey, Rance Cathey and wife Callie, Lacey Cathey-Dark and husband Eddy, Derek Cathey; plus 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 27, at Rosemound Cemetery, 3201 S. 12th St, Waco, TX, with his son, Larry Cathey officiating.
