Janie Nelline Harper, 83, of Robinson, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026. She will be laid to rest beside her late husband, Morris, at Robinson Cemetery after a graveside service scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Monday, October 26th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.
Janie was born on July 24, 1943, to Balford and Ruby Hurst. She grew up in the Levi area and went to Lorena schools. She married Morris Wayne Harper, Sr., on December 17, 1964. They shared 42 years of marriage before Morris passed away on February 5, 2007.
Janie’s life was best represented by the way she gave and served others. She was great at hosting family celebrations and weekend visits and celebrating birthdays and holidays. Her favorite holidays were Christmas and Easter. She didn’t work outside the home until her children were all in school. She then worked in health care and food service for several years before retiring to become a full-time caregiver. Her most fulfilling jobs were raising her children, helping with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and caring for Morris when he became ill. When Troy, Karen and Wayne were young, their friends knew there would be three home-cooked meals available every day. If they were ever in need, Janie would be there to offer an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry or lean on, and a heart of grace and compassion.
When Kayla joined the family, she couldn’t say Janie, so “Nanie” became her grandmother name. The grandchildren loved visiting Nanie and Grumpy’s. They watched movies in the playroom, snacked on whatever and wherever they chose, rode the golf cart in the field, played with cousins and enjoyed whatever special treat or gift Nanie had waiting just for them.
When she wasn’t giving care to someone, Janie enjoyed playing the piano and singing classic country songs. The extended family often played guitar and sang during family gatherings, and Janie spoke often about how much she loved those moments. She also enjoyed embroidering, designing florals, doing yard work, and taking and sharing photos. In her later years, she also enjoyed coloring and doing word puzzles.
Beloved nieces and nephews all adored Aunt Janie. She was the first to respond, the most willing to serve and sacrifice, and the most able to do what others couldn’t or wouldn’t. Janie loved visiting with her dear friends Connie Whatley and Elaine Cutler over the phone and cherished the times they could get together. Janie left a legacy of love, strength and determination and had no fear of death because she knew the Lord and trusted His promise for eternal life in Heaven.
Janie was preceded in death by her husband, Morris; her youngest son, Morris (Wayne) Harper, Jr.; her parents, Balford and Ruby Hurst; her parents-in-law, James and Bertha Harper; her sisters, Lynette Puryear and Myrna Puryear; and her brother, Steven Hurst.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Clydean Harper; sister-in-law, Sara Hurst; and children, Troy Reid and wife Julie, and Karen Ashcraft and husband Tony. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Colt Reid and children Logan, Katie and Rhett; Tory Reid; Sawyer Reid and sons Aiden, Ryder and Walker; Brandon Ashcraft and wife Theresa; Bailey Edwards, husband Matt and their son Callan; Braxton Ashcraft, wife Cassidy and daughter Elliott; Brooke Ashcraft; Ashtin Harper and daughters Memphis and Kellie; Kayla Salazar, husband Ruben and daughters Riley and Lily; and Johnathon Harper, wife Macie and their daughter Heidi.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Gentle Transitions Hospice and Caring Senior Services for their exceptional care during Janie’s brief illness.
