Harley Bryan Gordon, Jr, 94, of Hewitt, passed away on August 9, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Beacon Hill Baptist Church, 1912 Monte Vista, Waco, with Bro. Reggie Blake, Bro. Mike Ferus, Bro. Marvin Whittenburg, and Bro. Terry Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Lenamon Cemetery in Limestone County. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 12 at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.

Harley Gordon was born on August 1, 1928 in Dallas, Texas to Harley Bryan Gordon, Sr. and Blanche Myrtus Batchler. They moved to California when he was a child. He graduated from Hollywood High School. He went back to Texas after graduation. Harley joined the US Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was an Eagle Scout, serving 30 years as Scout Master, Boy Scout, and Adult Scout Leader. He was a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge. His Indian name was ‘Skajuna’ which means ‘The Eagle’. Harley surrendered to the ministry on Easter Sunday in 1957. He graduated from Jacksonville College, Baylor University, and then from BMA Theological Seminary. He began his work in the ministry at Sanders Creek Baptist Church in Fairoaks, Texas, then at Beacon Hill Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, Eastwood Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, Bauman Road Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Chickasaw, Alabama, and then back to Beacon Hill Baptist Church where he served as pastor, senior pastor and pastor emeritus for over 40 years at BHBC and over 60 years in the ministry. The mayor of Waco declared April 26, 1987, as “H. B. Gordon Day”.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his sister, Carol June Adair, and his great-grandson, Edward Stanley Ferguson IV.

Harley is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bettye Gordon; his son, Mark Gordon and wife Pon of Red Oak; his daughter, Sandra Ferguson, and Ralph Moore of Satsuma, AL; grandchildren, Edward Ferguson and wife Ashley, of Moody, AL, Bryan Ferguson of Chickasaw, AL, Daniel Ferguson of Satsuma, AL, and Abby Moore of Satsuma, AL; great-grandchildren, Elsie and Lucy Ferguson, of Moody, AL, Lillian, Daisy and Isaac Ferguson of Chickasaw, AL.

Pallbearers will be Edward Ferguson, Bryan Ferguson, Daniel Ferguson, Russell Crane, Stan Mason, Steve Williams, Michael Lewis, Kevin Bowling and honorary pallbearers are men of Beacon Hill Baptist Church.

Special thanks for Providence Hospice, our close neighbors always ready to lend a hand, and friends of the family, especially Renato and Lydia Lu and Mitch and Dorothy Lewis for all their help, and so many others, too many to name. Memorials may be made to the Gideons, and any Children’s Hospital, in memory of Eddie, Bro. Gordon’s great-grandson.
